Classroom Environment
For teachersCreating a Calm Classroom
A calm classroom is not a silent one. It is a space where children feel safe, seen, and able to focus.
Calm is contagious. When a classroom is calm, children can take risks, make mistakes, and learn. The environment and the adult’s nervous system are the first tools.
Rituals and routines
- A predictable start to the day reduces anxiety.
- Visual schedules help children anticipate what comes next.
- Transitions are kept short and intentional.
- There are clear, kind expectations rather than endless rules.
The physical space
- Soft lighting and natural materials where possible.
- Defined spaces for quiet, active, and collaborative work.
- A cosy corner where children can self-regulate.
- Displays that reflect the current learning and the children in the room.
Teacher presence
Your tone, pace, and breathing matter. Slow your body down. Lower your voice. Pause before intervening. Children read your state before they read your words.
A calm classroom is built in small, repeated choices. It is an environment that whispers, “You are safe here.”
