Building Strong Home-School Partnerships

Parents are a child’s first teachers. Schools have expertise in pedagogy. When both sides share what they know, children benefit.

Barriers to partnership

  • One-way communication that only tells families what to do.
  • Judgmental language about behaviour or parenting choices.
  • Timing that is too late to act on concerns.
  • Events that working parents cannot attend.

What works

  1. Start with strengths. Lead conversations with what the child can do and enjoys.
  2. Be specific. “She joined a group game today and invited a friend” is better than “She had a good day.”
  3. Offer options. Phone calls, voice notes, translated notes, or short meetings respect different schedules.
  4. Follow up. Partnerships are built in small, consistent interactions over time.

Schools that invest in family partnerships see better attendance, smoother transitions, and stronger learning outcomes. Most importantly, children feel safe because the important adults in their lives are connected.
